Brewing Up a Minor
In addition to being perhaps one of the oldest industries, brewing combines several aspects of the natural sciences including chemistry, botany, microbiology, and biochemistry. Thanks to an inherent interest in the products from brewing, it is also a potentially major route through which to teach the natural sciences. I was one of several people involved in putting together a Brewing and Distillation Studies minor at ETSU, and I would love to take this opportunity to discuss a little behind the background of brewing science, the construction of the minor, and where we might be able to take a brewing-focused program in the future.
