@Matthew Prus that opens to the areas of organic, biological/biochemistry and computational.

46:25
@Ronald - having a science background gives you an advantage in industry in those types of positions. Do your homework regarding the certifications to check for return on investment.

47:31
@Remington - Environmental is very interdisciplinary and you have many areas whiting chemistry and environmental that you can explore.

48:17
PSM degrees are significantly more costly because of the law/MBA component.

48:56
terminal master degrees can have a research component - do your homework!

@Antionette, the salary survey that Sam referenced at the beginning of his presentation includes an overall gender breakdown, and, yes, women earned less. (https://cen.acs.org/careers/salaries/What-US-chemists-make-according-to-the-2019-ACS-salary-survey/97/i43) On the more positive side, the most recent salary survey showed that salaries are the same for early career chemists.

Also look at "Nontraditional Careers for Chemists" by Lisa Balbes, on a similar topic of the wealth of things chemists do that is not necessarily bench chemistry research.

01:06:32
@Marco, that is a good book as well.

A good way to think about your career path is to do an Individualized Development Plan with your mentor. YOu can get more information about these here: https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/acs-webinars/professional-development/idp.html

@Robert and @Ana are right about effective writing skills.

01:22:49
@CAthy you might want to do a literature search in the area you are interested and see where the groups are.

Following on Ana-Rita's comment, there will be another ChemIDP workshop on Tuesday. These are great for considering what you really want out of a career https://acsoncampus.acs.org/events/chemidp-undergrad/

@Haven - not necessarily. It depends what you do and how you phrase it in your essay when you apply.

01:41:24
@Haven - It should not affect the level of funding for the PhD program
